Max Thomas – BBC Radio Suffolk Make a Difference Volunteer Award Winner 🥂🍾

Max has won the BBC Radio Suffolk Make a Difference Award for his tireless community work in Suffolk including regular school talks, the much loved Reflection Room micro museum at Sailmakers Shopping Centre, Ipswich, and the annual Windrush Legacy Festivals to celebrate Windrush Day.

Reflection Touring Bus

Following on from the success of our Reflection Room micro museum in Sailmakers Shopping Centre, Ipswich, it is now time for us to share this special space with our wider society. We aim to create the front room setting within a touring bus for all to see and reflect upon what we all have in common without social media all those years ago.

If you can help, please donate to our fundraiser.

Windrush room founder praised for volunteer work

The founder of a “living room exhibition” that honours the Windrush generation has been praised for his volunteer work. Max Thomas set up the Reflection Room in 2021 in an empty shopping centre unit in Ipswich. He has won the BBC Radio Suffolk Make a Difference Volunteer Award at a ceremony at Trinity Park on 17 September. Mr Thomas said: “A lot of the elders are passing away, with such valuable stories, such gems, and if we don't capture those and archive them, they'll be lost forever.”

Windrush 77 to bring colour and culture to Ipswich this month

The Windrush Generation transformed British society after arriving from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971, with many settling in towns like Ipswich. This annual festival celebrates their lasting contribution to our community while bringing together residents of all backgrounds for one of Suffolk's biggest cultural celebrations. Organisers say the event has grown significantly since launching, describing it as “about coming together to celebrate identity, legacy and resilience.”
